I really love this idea, DW. It sounds so beautiful. A girl falling in love with a dragon. I picture it as like a heartbreaking piece of work. Because the girl and the dragon are so different it's hard for people to understand their love and accept it.
I often jump to conclusions and make my own theories. Seriously, you don't want to watch movies with me. It's painful.
I imagine the world being in turmoil other than being a bright, cheery, vivid land where everything is perfect and lovely. Except for one side of the world that's all evil and such. Instead I see the world kind of how ours is now but with more kinds of species. Fairies, mermaids, dragons, elves...ect.
Almost like there has been a war raging for centuries, some towns have gone unharmed while other have been destroyed or overrun.
And the Dragons were the cities best defense but when the cities began to be destroyed and dragons slaughtered the dragons went into hiding. Then the main girl arrives at a time like this, a time when a city it being attacked and she is completely lost as to what has happened. But there has always been dragon watching over the people in the town, hidden amongst them as a human. The dragon fights back against the attackers and runs them out of town and then flees but in truth he just disappears and then turns back into his human self and rejoins the town. This is when the main character meet him.
I picture him to have scars on his body because of all the fights he's been in. A few on his face making him less perfect and pretty. But no matter in the form of a dragon or human his eyes remain the same. (Not sure what color, you decide) So one day when the dragon defends the main character she sees the dragon's eyes and she recognizes them but she doesn't believe it to be true. She doesn't connect the pieces right then or maybe she does and that's when she learns the truth about him. Or maybe while they're together as human's someone attacks them and he turns into a dragon to defend themselves. Whichever one.
It seems like the main character gives the dragon strength. While he's with her he feels like he can do anything, he doesn't want to just be waiting around to protect towns he wants to go to the enemy instead. He could become the leader of those dragons that remain and together they choose to take the battle to the enemy instead of the other way around.
But even then it seems people are too afraid for change, they see the main character and the dragon's union as not meant to be. Not right.
Then when the dragons save the day, cause seriously they totally have to save the day, the people eat their words.
It's hard to say where the best place to stay would be. Does the main character stay in the dragon's world or does the dragon goes to hers? Of course if the main character had no family/friends dragon's world would be first choice but if she does it would be hard to stay. And vica versa with the dragon.
Just a few ideas for ya.

As I said, I theorize. Hope they can help you somehow cause I can't wait to read this story! Get writing!
I expect to see Conflicting Realities making its way over here sometime soon, too.
