What to write about

Postby DarkWaltz on Sun Aug 17, 2008 11:13 pm

So... basically all I ever write is fantasy. Which is awesome and I like it, but I want to write some other kind of stuff. But I don't really know what to write about. What are some general ideas to go off of? There's always the mystery track, and the romance once, but what are some good plot ideas for just general fiction?

It seems like we're all trying to do something different lately. Which is good, right? Although pommie's still off with his dragons...XD

Why not try a historical fiction? :/

Hmmm, that's a tough one, DW. I get most of my ideas from dreams, you could try that route. loll

The toughest genre I've tried to write is realistic fiction. I don't know why but I have a tough time with it. If you want to try something different you could try a realistic fiction.

If you want to get general plot ideas look at Quizilla. All the stories on there are basically the same exact story just mixed around by different users.

You could always write like futuristic/sci-fi, cos its just like fantasy except that instead of magic its machines (this is a very bland generalization. sorry).

There's group-y, cult-y things. Like, the story is moved by a group of people that just stick together. Organizations? They're always a challenge to me (because they're sort of hard to write about) but I'm trying with my weird screenplay thingy.

...That's all I got at the moment, but if I really thought about it I could find more.

I agree with AA... Perhaps, becuase you are used to Fantasy, you could try Sci-Fi... As it is different, but not such a long stretch... You may not want to change TOO much at once... The thing with Sci-Fi is that you can have a realistic situation... You can have a romance... But to make sure that you don't get tired, or feel too out of place... Have a Sci-Fi twist?

I don't know... See, my story ideas mostly come to me, and I start planning and go "Hey, this is a relistic fiction!" or something to that effect... As far as changing on purpose...I don't know...I find that if I create a story idea for the sake of it, it doesn't take me as much... It doesn't pull me in for the ride...

I have been trying to change it up a bit too though... I have been having more Sci-Fi ideas... But I have also been developing some short stories... Have yet to complete one... But I have always had an issue with them in the past, so I am trying to get past that...

*shrugs*

Sorry I'm not much help...

Hmm... Sounds good. Historical fiction sounds fun too.

Well, there's a plot generator on seventh sanctum, you could always try that. :/

^Eh, I don't often find things I like on plot generators. Thanks, though.

Anyone have any specific ideas?

Being the sci-fi geek I am you'd think I'd be all over Sci-Fi plots but I'm oddly not. Hmmm....watch the sci-fi channel maybe? :P

Give me some time to think and I might come up with something! I'm tired and my brother made me work out for like 3 hours with him so I'm worn out. lol

So I actually tried the Seventh Sanctum plot generator. Lol. It was kind of amusing. But it actually gave me a couple cool ideas! Not that I still have no idea what to write about and can't seem to come up with any novel-worthy plots, but oh well.
