Thought Check

Postby Apoc_Master on Thu Dec 25, 2008 8:59 am

I am writing a book. I want it to be a series of books. The plot is this:

General: The entire world is controlled by four superpowers, Russia, Britain, Ethiopia, and The U.S. They are all on the brink of war by the year 2011.
Russia will attack the U.S. because they're Russia that's what they do. Ethiopia will also attack the U.S. because the u.s. is morally corrupt (not really but they don't have to be right). And Britain will attack the U.S. for the war in Iraq (which cost Britain Billions of dollars. The war starts in 2012, with the three attacking the fourth.

Specific: Past: Man and wife move into a junkyard of a house previously owned by his late grandparents. The man cleans out the yard and finds that his grandpa was working on a 'mech. the mech is far from complete so the Man starts working on it and other inventions. he had been abused by the us military so he will not work for them. and he starts recruiting soldiers out of his extended family into a small army

Specific: Present: The war starts April 2012. Ethiopia attacks South America (controlled by the U.S.). Britain attacks the East Coast of Old USA. While Russia Attacks the West Coast of the Old U.S. (where the Man lives) and the us military (stupidly) is completely unprepared.

Now my questions...
Should i change country names?
What should i name characters... I'm stumped and don't want to use the names of the people the characters are modeled after.
And the most important, Should i just scrap this??

Note: This is the effect of one of my semi-controlled dreams..

I think this could work, but you would have to put a lot of effort into making it really realistic. Countries don't just declare war for a single reason; you'll have to come up with sound arguments. Definitely don't name your characters after whoever you're modeling them after in real life, but I think you should leave the countries their names. As to whether you should try it or not, I think if you really want to tell this story you should go right ahead. Things to this effect have been done before, but that's not to say your story won't be new and exciting.

Whenever I can't seem to come up with a name for one of my charries I go, here.

It tends to help me quite a bit, I also find that if you have a general description of a character you can find the name you like easier. Or if I find the name first I then base the character around their name.

Hope that helps! :D

Not that I don't like your idea or anything, because it is AWESOME, but if you look at WWI and WWII, the ally system made it a huge war. If 3 huge super powers attacked one huge superpower they would fold. Fast. Almost too fast for a war.

Maybe there was a peace treaty signed by these powers, but Russia breaks it to attack the US (resources? tensions? Idk..) and then Ethiopia attacks Russia for breaking the treaty because they were strong supporters of the peace treaty or something, and then Britain comes along and supports Russia because they want to take the US too or they want to get back at Ethiopia or something.

Ethiopia & US vs. Britain & Russia

Or you could switch those up!

It doesn't really matter, I suppose, but if the war was more balanced I think there would be a stronger element of fear and war strategy.

Mmm, I agree with what Shaye said. It would give you more tension and options of strategy also, not just death...

Still sounds like you should write it.

Obviously there was a reason your brain pushed it on you, and then started you thinking about how it would run as a story. I encourage the writing.

Even if you write it and find it doesn't quite work, even if you never show anyone, the writing is what is most important. If it never goes anywhere, it is still another world that has come from within your brain. It is still practice for all those other stories you will write. It is still wonderful.

And you might find that you have a bestseller.

So if your brain wants you to write it, do so.

If we relied on others to tell us if we wanted to like something, or do this or that, then we would never explore and find the things that we love.

If I relied on what others said in relation to writing, I would never write at all.
